I’ve been asked by the Chairman to give an insight
as to what members can expect if they take a trip to the Bury Lane Fishery at
Melbourn, near Royston. This is the small commercial fishery that members
now have the opportunity to fish on a half priced Day Ticket.
I started to fish Bury Lane about three years ago before it was opened
as a day ticket fishery. Fish were caught on every visit, with most
needing the services of a landing net. Most baits succeeded with luncheon meat,
corn and maggots being the most successful.
The lake is almost split in two by a promontory. The part of the lake
nearest to the car park is the deepest with depths to 16 ft. with two or three
gullies leading to the deepest spot. The area furthest away from the car
park has a depth to 12 ft with three plateaux rising to within 6ft – 4ft of the
surface.
Most swims (22 in all) offer depths of 6 ft. – 7 ft. under the rod tip.
Pole, float and leger are all successful, resulting in Carp to 23lb.; Tench
7lb.; Bream 3lb.; Rudd 2lb.; Perch 2¾lb. (my PB) and Barbel to 2½lb..
Just before signing off I would like to tell you of one afternoon’s
fishing that I can only describe as ‘brutal’ fishing. I started fishing
with the permitted two rods, fishing the tip on both. In 2½ hours I caught 15
carp between 5lb and 20lb.
The action was so fast and furious that in the end I could only fish one
rod as it was impossible to bait and cast the second rod. So, if you would like a great day’s fishing in
pleasant surroundings, give it a go – I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Kevin Chadfield |
