3rd March 2008

Beckerings Reservoir, Steppingley, is certainly producing some quality carp. Michael Evans is on a roll with a fine 21lb common followed by a personal best mirror weighing in at 29lbs 10ozs. We believe this mirror is commonly known as 'Little Gurty', and was caught on the 24th February at 3.00am see pictures, subsequently Michael has returned and last weekend caught 3 low doubles. Low doubles were also caught by Peter Strudwick and Gary Stevens. Joanne Edwards fishing overnight on the 23rd caught a mirror carp of 14lb 12ozs a common of 11lbs and also whilst fishing for carp caught a bream of around 9lbs. Bream are showing with one angler over the weekend catching 3 decent fish. Mick Stringer had a common of 22lbs and pike up to 12lbs were reported on Saturday.

At Wyboston on the South Lagoon, James Bishop and a mate Chris Dennis fished on Friday night and despite gale force winds caught 5 pike to 13lbs 4ozs and 3 zander to 9lbs 8ozs between them. Mark Simmonds caught an 8lb zander and a couple of jacks. Over the week 6 other small zander were reported. On North House lake Dave Tuff caught a fantastic 27lb 12oz common carp.

On the river Great Ouse at Lavendon, Steve Morey fished for 3 hours last Sunday below the weir in the second field and caught 6 pike spinning rubber shads. The first fish came out on the second cast, weighing in at 5lb 10ozs the largest weighed 9lbs 2ozs. Remember this weekend is the last chance to fish the rivers before the close season starts on Friday the 14th March. Give it a go there are plenty of chub to be caught at Biddenham, Lavendon and Eaton Ford.

On the Grand Union canal there were very few anglers out during the week but bailiff James Dewberry witnessed a fine 3lb perch being caught on section 7 to float fished maggot. A few matches have taken place on the canal recently:-

Following the coldest night of the year with temperatures dipping below -7 degrees icebreakers were the order of the day. Whilst the sun ensured everyone was comfortable the fish were less obliging. Most sections managed some reasonable weights, but with fish being tightly shoaled there were a number of dry nets and anglers scoring good points with a couple of ounces. Roger Bone came through for his second consecutive win at this venue with 12lb 5oz of skimmers, closely followed on the next peg by Paul Oldroyd with 11lb 9oz. Both anglers lost fish during the day, but had a comfortable margin on their nearest rivals.
